Everything You Need to Know about Natural Body Lotion

So, you want to use a clean, natural body lotion that leaves your skin hydrated and vibrant? We’ve got you covered.

With a recent rise in “clean beauty” products, more and more people want to invest in items that harness skin-supporting natural ingredients and give you healthier, glowing skin.

However, not all “clean” or “natural” self-care products are created equal. The beauty industry uses different terms to describe products, and it can be hard to determine which products use natural ingredients and which don’t.

Today, we’ll give you the best tips on how to find the right natural body lotion for your skin and what the terms “natural” and “clean” really mean.

What to Consider When Choosing a Natural Body Lotion

On your quest to find the holy grail—a natural body lotion that leaves your skin perfectly hydrated and radiant—consider a few key factors.

Know Your Skin Type

When it comes to skincare products, you should always choose products that treat your specific concern. For example, if your lovely skin produces excess oil, you’ll likely want to steer clear of heavy lotions that drench the skin in extreme moisture. Instead, you’ll likely want a lightweight moisturizer that uses natural ingredients to help curb oil production.

There are six main skin types:

  • Oily or acne-prone
  • Combination
  • Sensitive
  • Normal
  • Dry
  • Mature

When shopping for a new lotion, look for products that treat your skin concerns. Many popular body lotions that use organic or naturally derived ingredients are formulated for dry, mature, normal, or sensitive skin.

Look for Safe, Effective Ingredients

The most important thing in any self-care product is the ingredients. Natural body lotions typically harness potent plant-based botanicals and other naturally derived materials to provide the skin with extreme nourishment and maximum hydration.

The best natural ingredients for body lotions include:

  • Aloe vera
  • Shea butter
  • Green tea extract
  • Jojoba oil
  • Seaweed extract
  • Cocoa butter
  • Argan oil
  • Almond oil

Be sure your body lotion contains some of these nutrient-dense, hydrating ingredients to soothe the skin.

Research Brands

Whatever “natural,” “clean,” or premium skincare brand you’re interested in, be sure to do the dirty work and research the brand. If you’re the type of person who says, “Heck, I don’t care what’s in my lotion as long as it smells good and makes my skin look fabulous,” you can skip this step.

But for folks interested in what ingredients and certifications a brand may have, read our ‘natural’ skincare glossary below.

Your Glossary for ‘Natural’ Skincare

Tossing around words like “natural” is often vague and doesn’t give you a clear idea of what you’re buying. According to Marisa Garshich, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, “There’s no formal system that regulates ‘natural’ or a legal definition of what this term means.”

We’ll break down the most important terms in natural skincare. Here’s what you need to know.

  • Natural. Products labeled “natural” use ingredients sourced from nature, but they are not regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), the term “natural” has no legal definition for cosmetics and skin care products. When using products with a ‘natural’ label, read the ingredient list so you know what you’re buying.
  • Nontoxic or toxin-free. This label typically means that products are made free of ingredients that cause toxic responses in humans. Toxin-free self-care products usually don’t use parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and other potentially harmful ingredients.
  • Clean. While the term “clean” is also unregulated, it usually means the same thing as “natural.” Clean beauty products are often made with natural ingredients and are “free from” ingredients like parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and more. Each brand creates its own formulas and uses unique ingredients, so be sure to research and learn more about clean beauty brands before buying. There is also no legal definition for the term “clean,” so beauty and wellness brands can use it at their leisure.
  • Organic. The term “organic” is not always regulated on skincare or cosmetics labels. Companies may use the term organic on their products, and only when a formula is made from agricultural ingredients will it need to be certified organic through the USDA National Organic Program (NOP). A self-care product must be made with at least 95 percent organic ingredients to get the USDA Organic Seal. Products labeled “made with organic ingredients” contain at least 70 percent organic ingredients but aren’t allowed to use the official seal.

We know what you’re thinking. Does this mean I should buy organic body lotion instead of one labeled “natural” or “clean”? That’s entirely up to you. Just know that there are many safe, effective moisturizers formulated with naturally derived ingredients that don’t use the organic label.

We recommend always doing your research and ensuring you’re using products you trust.
